Bike baskets are the ideal accessory for carrying what you need while you pedal. Your shopping, your bag, your backpack, some flowers,... bring what you want with you without having to carry it by hand or on your back. Bicycle baskets can be front or rear, and are designed for a bag, small shopping sprees, or in any case not excessively heavy material. The main advantage is convenience and accessibility, which is greater than with bike bags, but the bike basket can carry less weight and cannot be closed (except for some models). Usually baskets are adaptable to almost all bikes on the market, so compatibility with your bike should not be a problem!

Bicycle baskets

Baskets can be installed on both the front and rear of the bicycle and are available in a wide variety of sizes and materials.

In general, it is a good idea to choose quality, sturdy bicycle baskets and, above all, to make sure they are securely attached to the bicycle to prevent them from coming loose while riding. One tip may be to install a rack, front or rear, and place the basket on top, so that you can also carry heavier objects safely.

The main classification of bike baskets concerns the material from which they are made.
In the best cycling shops such as Cicli Mattio you can find:

  • Aluminium/metal baskets

Aluminium baskets may be somewhat heavier, but they are also stronger and more durable. It is generally cheaper, and in addition to its low price, is characterised by its high load capacity, strength and flexibility. There are two main types: the tightly woven metal bicycle basket, which is excellent for carrying single items, and the open mesh basket, which is designed to hold closed bags so that there is no risk of losing items while riding. Another aspect that makes them a winning choice is their ease of installation.

  • Rigid plastic baskets

Bicycle baskets can be made of rigid plastic and it is precisely this material that allows for different models in terms of shape, colour and size. They also exist in both adult and children's basket versions. Because of their low weight, they can be easily attached to children's bikes without weighing down or unbalancing the bike. The disadvantage of these types of bike baskets is that they are exposed to the elements and therefore wear and tear.

Front bicycle baskets

The bike basket can be attached to the front of the bike, to the handlebar or to the front rack. With regard to these two options, in order to choose the best solution it is good to evaluate the weight you intend to load. In fact, a basket fixed to the handlebar normally weighs a maximum of around 6 to 7 kg depending on the handlebar and the basket model, whereas if the basket is installed on the front rack it can support a weight of around 10 to 15 kg.
The front basket is certainly very handy and accessible for the cyclist.

Rear bicycle baskets

If you choose a rear bicycle basket, the mounting system requires it to be attached to the rear rack or seatpost. There are also models that have integrated luggage racks, making them easier to mount on a bike without a rack.

The rear basket has the advantage that it is usually larger and can carry more weight: in fact, the maximum load for a rear basket attached to a luggage rack is normally around 25 kg. So you can load your shopping, books, gym bag, your children's backpacks and continue cycling without clutter and hassle!
