The bottom bracket is the component hidden between the crank arms that allows the spindle to rotate freely, transforming the cyclist's power into motion. Located and hidden inside the frame, it houses ball bearings or a cartridge that ensure efficiency and smoothness of the pedaling.
There are different standards: from traditional square taper or cartridge (BSA or ITA threaded), to advanced external cup systems like Shimano Hollowtech II and Campagnolo Ultra-Torque, to modern press-fit (BB30, BB86, T47, etc.), all dictated by compatibility between the crankset and the frame.
Choosing it correctly means ensuring a smooth, stable, and durable transmission: the selection is based on the type of crankset, dimensions and threading of the bottom bracket, and the desired riding behavior, while technologies like ceramic bearings or hollow spindle improve performance.
